Polygamy & Communism Good for the Environment

In what has got to be one of the most ridiculous studies I've ever seen, Dr. Jianguo Liu, director of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability at Michigan State University, has claimed that divorce leads to "resource-inefficient lifestyles" that are bad for the environment. This is because when people divorce, they use more electricity, water, housing, appliances, and even gas for driving to and from visitation.

Jianguo Liu then makes some policy recommendations based on this. He recommends that the government encourage divorced people to fall in love again, provide tax incentives for divorced people to get remarried and make getting a divorce more difficult.

Liu, however, does not take his recommendations to their logical conclusions. Why not legalize polygamy? This would result in an even lower consumption of housing, gas and applicances. Heck, when not make it mandatory for everyone to live in a big commune? That would create the ultimate environmental benefit!

There are a lot of good reasons not to get divorced, but the environment sure isn't one of them. As well, if you do get divorced, it simply doesn't make sense to rush into another relationship, even if doing so is good for the environment. And people like Liu should be kicked out of their ivy towers and forced to live in the real world for a while.
